 In the whirlwind world of entrepreneurship, especially for those of us managing ADHD, it's incredibly easy to fall into the trap of overextending ourselves. Whether it's clients who demand just a bit more or family and friends needing another chunk of our time, the give-and-give cycle can be exhausting. But here’s a truth I’ve come to fiercely embrace: boundaries are not just a nice-to-have; they’re crucial for sustainable success.

Why Boundaries Matter More for ADHD Entrepreneurs

For ADHD entrepreneurs, boundaries do more than create a balanced life—they safeguard our mental energy from being depleted by the myriad demands we face every day. Without these boundaries, we risk burnout, resentment, and a stagnating business. Here’s how I’ve learned to maintain strict boundaries that help me thrive both professionally and personally:

Define Clear Work Hours

Example in Business: I once struggled with client calls encroaching into my family time. Now, I have set work hours. I aim to wrap up by 4-5 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Why? Because family time in the evenings is where I choose to be present (as of December 2024 we have an 8 yr old daughter and a 5 yr old son).

Example in Personal Life: To ensure I have quality time with my family, I no longer take business calls during dinner or on weekends. This boundary has helped reinforce the importance of my personal time to my clients and my family.

Protect Your Energy

Example in Business: I keep most notifications off because I'm not about that life where I jump every time my phone buzzes. Real talk: I’ve never had a 'true' emergency in business, so why stress? Other people’s ‘urgent’ issues aren’t my urgent issues. 

Example in Personal Life: I used to say yes to every social event to avoid disappointing people. Now, I selectively attend only those gatherings that I genuinely enjoy or find meaningful, which has significantly reduced my social exhaustion.

Delegate Wisely

Example in Business: Delegation was a game-changer for me when I was going through different seasons of my business and life. I’ve hired virtual assistants to handle routine administrative tasks, which freed up my time to focus on strategic planning and client-facing work. When I was working with those people it reduced the mental clutter that often overwhelms those of us with ADHD.

Example in Personal Life: At home, my husband and I agreed that he’s in charge of dishes and I’m in charge of laundry. Thank god because the sensory stuff with gross dishes is not for me.

Prioritize Personal Time

Example in Business: I schedule short breaks throughout my workday to prevent burnout. These breaks are non-negotiable, much like any other business appointment.

Example in Personal Life: I've made it a ritual to spend the first part of most mornings in solitude—journaling, drinking coffee and planning my day—before the rest of the household wakes up. This "me time" is crucial for maintaining my mental health.

Reflecting on Personal Boundaries

As we navigate the demands of entrepreneurship, it’s worth reflecting on the boundaries we set (or fail to set). These boundaries are a direct reflection of how much we value ourselves and our time. By respecting our own limits, we teach others to do the same, paving the way for healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life.
