You’re getting into bed. You’re all comfy and cozy. You take a deep inhale then it hits you. You forgot to x, y, and z!!! You’re in bed; there’s no chance you’re getting back out to do those things. You’ll get to them tomorrow, right? Wrong. Tomorrow night rolls around, and you have the exact same thought. I want to share with you my one simple productivity habit for making sure I tackle the right things every day (no matter how crazy my schedule is).
Let’s face it, getting your ass in gear is hard work. Some days it’s hard enough fixing your hair or changing into something other than yoga pants.
I want to talk to you about how you can be insanely productive.
You already have a thousand things to do. And yeah, you’re going to forget to do some of those things. But that’s not what the problem is.
The problem is when you know what needs to get done, but you overlook it by adding things to your to-do list or finding some random activity to do when you sit down to do whatever it is that needs doing.
Why do you keep ‘forgetting’ to do the ‘right’ things?
- You’re procrastinating (stop it!).
- You’re not aware of what needs to happen. Yea, you may know the big picture but what needs to happen today, and tomorrow and the next day to get to that big picture?
- You’re not planning ahead.
- You’re trying to do too much at once.
Trust me; I’ve been there. I have those days I don’t get shit done. I’ll sit down to work on something and end up aimlessly browsing Wayfair or Pinterest for house ideas (side project). This is far from being insanely productive. This is frazzled and feels like I’m falling behind.
When this happens, I produce half ass work. Not just on the task at hand, it’s like I’m handing out half-assery. Dinner, cleaning, workout, blog post – all half-assed.
I think I’ve nailed one down one of the most significant contributing factors: I don’t have a ‘typical day.’ There’s no wake up at 7 am, do this, do that, sit down and work. While some parts of me wish it was ritualized, I’d go stir crazy! I love the freedom and spontaneity of my current schedule, some days…
Here is one simple productivity habit for making sure I tackle the right things every day.
Plan your day out the night before!
This is such a simple yet overlooked thing we can be doing. It literally takes a couple of minutes to scan my calendar, look at what needs to get done the next day and write it down.
It also helps to give yourself a timeframe of how long you’re going to work on each task too. And don’t add too many things to your list or you’ll be right back where you started. I try to keep it to what has to happen tomorrow and limit it to 5 tasks, if not less.
This method works so well because when you plan what you have to get done amongst the rest of your calendar, you can pencil in the time slots you alotted for those – the right things.
This way, you’re not waking up thinking, “hmmm, I wonder what I should be doing right now,” or “what should I work on first?” Only to freak out later in the day because you forgot to do ‘x’ or didn’t drop off ‘y.’ Thus preventing that stressed out, rushing cray-cray feeling.
Remember, “this isn’t just about getting more done. It’s about getting the right things done each and every day so you can make the difference you were put on the planet to make.”
